Level Crossing Again

[Special to "Northern Advocate ”l PALMERSTON N„ This Day.

A large horse float was wrecked last evening when it failed to clear the railway line at West Street as the north-bound Auckland express was entering the railway yard. The driver, Mr Robert Brown, a married man, had a miraculous escape from death. He was alone, and the float was not carrying any horses. Wreckage was strewn along the line for a distance of about 50 yards. A fire was seen in the debris, and the brigade was summoned and extinguished the flames without difficulty. The locomotive of the express was damaged. Mr Brown was taken to the hospital with fractured ribs. His condition is fairly serious.

The West Street crossing has a bad record, and as recently as the Labour Day weekend a man in a light car was killed there.
