Punter Couldn’t Lose On Melbourne Cup
Mr Hymie Silk, a wealthy manufacturer, could not lose on the Melbourne Cup. The least he could win was £IOOO, the most £15.000,
Mr Silk was in his happy position because of early double bets at long odds with Rivette, winner of the Caulfield Cup. Pie coupled Rivette with Son of Aurous to win £17.000, and with 16 other horses to win amounts varying from £2OOO to £SOOO.
Whjen final acceptances for the Cup left a field of 28, Mr Silk backed the other 14 candidates to win him £IOOO clear each.
At L»ng Odds
Most of them were at long odds, and their backing was inexpensive.
He even included such forlorn outsiders as Netherlea and Windlelon. who have been beaten in the poorest company.
“I made the Cup watertight,” he said.
“It is a punter's dream come true.’
