More Recruits Needed For Second Echelon
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
In the four military areas in the Northern Military District, the need for recruits for the second echelon of the New Zealand Force is still apparent.
The four areas have only about half the number of volunteers who will probably be required to fill the district quota. Many to be Examined. The Whangarei, Auckland, Paeroa and Hamilton areas, comprising the district, have 837 men available for posting fo camp. Many of these, however, have not yet been medically examined, and some may be rejected because they belong to reserved occupations. In addition, 61 of them are married men with no children, and 223 are married with one or more children. It is probable that the number available for the second echelon will therefore be further reduced, as not all married men have so far obtained the necessary consent of their wives.
83 Offering From Whangarei
Of the 837 offering, 406 are on the Auckland area’s roll, 277 from the Paeroa area, 83 from Whangarei, and 71 from Hamilton.
So far, the district has sent 2432 men to camp, 1338 coming from Auckland, 331 from Paeroa, 364 from Whangarci, and 379 from Hamilton.
At Standstill
The impetus given recruiting in Northland by the Prime Minister’s announcement that the special military force will be going overseas seems to have been short-lived. Although last Friday a larger number enlisted that in any one day for a number of weeks, on Monday not one single man offered. The names of two married men, both with a number of children, were recorded, but at present the military authorities are not taking this class of recruits.
