Kaipara Skeleton From Maori Cemetery ?
The skeleton found in the Kaipara Harbour on Monday is believed to be of considerable age. Investigations carried out by Constable Power, of Ruawai, reveal that the skeleton, which was found on the mainland beach opposite Tinopai, probably has come from an old Maori burial ground. Tinopai Maoris believe that the sea has eaten its way into the land at this point and has exposed part of a former native cemetery. Only the skull and teeth, which were exposed to the weather and had been bleached, were in good condition, the remainder of the bones crumbling to dust when touched. No fragments of clothing or buttons were found in the vicinity and there was no sign of any wood which might have formed part of a coffin. Lack of evidence of this nature gives support to the belief that the skeleton is that of a Maori buried many years ago.
