Maungaturoto Dairy Co.’s Anti-Set Price Motion
No section of the community realises more than the dairy farmer the urgent necessity for increased production which was of vital importance to the Empire’s food controllers, the overseas forces and civilians of the British Isles and France. A resolution pased by the board of directors of the Maungaturoto Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd. stated thisIt added: “Conditions are against increased production for the following reasons: “The Government’s action in fixing prices for dairy produce at a level is considered to be inadequate in view of increased costs of production; injustices are being suffered by the farmer by reason that no satisfactory attempt has been made to correlate the fixed price with the increased costs. “Sufficient hardship has already been placed on the farmer by the competition of labour from the Public Works Department and steps should be taken to deter the Government from recruiting or accepting troops engaged in farms or working in dairy factories.
“This meeting expresses its determination to do its utmost to assist in increasing production, but must place on record its dissatisfaction with the attitude of the Government, and urge that immediate steps be taken -to encourage the farmer.”
