Volunteers Encamp on October 4

The main body of Northland volunteers for the special military force now being recruited will probably enter camp on Wednesday, October 4. This advice was given by Major H. G. Wooller, N.Z.S.C., officer in chax-ge of the Army Office at Whangarei, this morning. 1

Officex’s and n.c.o.’s, together* with a small advance party, will enter camp on the previous Wednesday, September 27.

“Those to be selected from Northland comprise the finest type of young man in New Zealand,” said Major Wooller.

“A very high standard of fitness is being insisted upon.” It is hoped that the names of those being selected for training will be available for publication to-morrow. 64 Per Cent. Fit. Of the 470 volunteers notified to attend medical examinations, 413 have been examined, and the remainder will I be completed in the next few days. Of those already examined. 263, or 64 per cent, have been passed as fit; 96, or 24 per cent., are classed as tem-pox-arily unfit; and 54, or 12 per cent., have been x-ejected as unfit. Within the next few days the total number of recruits required to fill the Northland quota will have been provided.

This quota will be filled from entirely fit men, those temporarily unfit not being accepted yet.
