Flame Breaks Polish Resistance at Danzig P.O.
NEW YORK, September 4.
In the first despatch since the annexation, the Danzig correspondent of the Associated Press of America describes how flame finally broke the resistance of 70 Poles, who, with machine-guns, held the Post Office in the centre of the city. After vainly assaulting the Post Office, the Germans brought up light artillery and blew away the front of the building. Then they poured water with petrol on it into the building and set it on fire.
The correspondent adds that the clatter of machine-guns at every offensive indicates that some defenders of the Westerplatte ammunition dump are still alive. Aeroplanes dropped 60 bombs into the fort yesterday, while shelling from the sea continues.
K; The populace was ordered out into H'the surrounding territory today, apparently in preparation for a smothering bombardment. /I'?; . .
