infectious Diseases. Ten cases of infectious diseases Have been reported to the Health Department, Whangarei, during the month of August. These figures cover both Maoris and Europeans. Cases were as follows: Scarlet fever, 2; diphtheria, 3; T. 8., 4; erysipelas 1.

Court Presentation.

The presentation of a fountain-pen was made by Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., on behalf of the staff of the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court, to Mr E. R. Graham, prior to his departure to take uu his new duties as assistant clerk of court in Wellington. Mr Graham as congratulated on his promotion, and the hope expressed that his associations in his. new sphere would be as pleasant as in Whangarei.

Petrol Consumers Queue Up With restrictions on the sale, of petrol coming into force to-day, the Whangarei Post Office staff was kept exceptionally busy receiving applications for consumers’ licences. From the time of the office opening throughout the day there was a long unbroken queue of motorists placing their needs before the authorities.

Freak Pig Bom At Purua. 4 With two bodies, eight legs and one head, a freak pig bom at Purua lived only a short time. Mr G. B, Dyer states that both bodies were perfectly formed and the head was normal, except that there was ,an extra pair of ears growing from the back of the head. The bodies were joined midway up the body, to merge into the head. The other pigs in a litter of 11 were quite normal.

Bandsmen Offer Service-

Members of the Whangarei Municipal Band are offering their services to the Army Department. They came to this decision at a meeting held during band practice last night, the 26 bandsmen signifying their approval of the step. The proposal has yet to be ratified by the senior committee of the organisation.

Remand to Petone

A remand to Petone was granted by Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., in the Whangarei Magistrate’s court today, when Edgar Basil Oliver, aged 24, labourer, of Whangarei, was charged that on or about May 2, 1939, at Petone, with to dlefraud, .he .-did obtain from Minnie 1 Kathrine. Henry, a cheque for £147, by falsely representing that a motor car which he was owing £144 16/ was his own property and unencumbered.

Control of Whangarei Shipping. As from vessels leaving the Whangarei harbour limits can do so only under permit from the Whangarei Harbour Board. Mr E. L. Whimp, Harbour Board chairman, announced this at a meeting of launchowners- and yachtsmen last night. Before leaving the harbour, vessels must make application to the harbourmaster’s department for the necessary permission, filling in the requisite form, stating their destinatipn and other details.

The concluding stages of Henry Wilson’s sale are marked by brisk business. The wise ones are buying freely. If thrift is a virtue, then it’s easy to be virtuous at Wilson’s, because every penny spent shows a saving of at least 20 per cent.
