The Whangarei junior representatives failed lo withstand Mangonui’s challenge for the Brake Shield at Kensington Park, losing by It! points to six.
After being behind for most of the game Whangarei gained a point lead in the closing stages, but Mangonui quickly reversed positions and scored twice to win comfortably. Favoured by the sun but playing against a slight wind. Whangarei held an early advantage, but Mangonui returned play to midfield. After a long spell in neutral territory, . Mangonui opened the scoring. Masters started the movement. Flinn making a nice dash to cross in the corner. He converted his try with a great effort from near the sideline. Wilson figured prominently in a Whangarei attack, but the defence held. Fielding a long kick, Parkes failed to find the line, but Warren’s kick in return hit another Mangonui player and bounced back. .Jones snapped up the ball and raced over, only to be brought back for a knock-
Maintaining the attack, Whangarei again was nearly successful, Weston being pushed out in racing for the line. Hanging on in the face of another home attack cost Mangonui a penalty, Penney raising the flags.— Mangonui 5, Whangarei 3. Mangonui made several strong attacks which were spoiled by infringements, and half-time came without further score.
Immediately the game was resumed Mangonui swung to. the attack and Whangarei was compelled to force. Sustaining the attack, Mangonui twice went near to scoring before Whangarei was successful in penetrating to the opposing quarter. However, the excursion was only temporary and Mangonui was again hammering away.
An infringement by Whangarei gave Wright a shot which fell short, the home team touching down. Whangarei again had to force a moment later. A line-finder by Parkes then put the blues into opposing territory. The Mangonui backs went away in a nice handling movement, Moselen intercepting an fn-field pass to relieve. Suddenly the Whangarei backs went away, Wilson opening up to send to Weston, who shot up the centre of the field. Brushing off a tackle, he drew the full-back, Warren, and then passed to James, who had raced up outside him in support, and James went over in the corner to finish a fine effort. Haigh failed to convert.--Whangarei G, Mangonui 5. Edwards failed with a penalty from just inside half-way and then the backs went away for Wright to score in the corner. Murray failed.— Mangonui 8.
