Whangarei Retains Powell Shield

THIRD GRADE

By a single unconverted try scored shortly after the start of the second spell, the Whangarei third grade representative team retained the Powell Shield.

Mangonui met Whangarei at Kensington Park, the visitors’ challenge failing after a close, even game. Mangonui held the territorial advantage in the first spell, Whangarei showing up better after the interval when playing with the wind. The Mangonui backs appeared younger and lighter than their opponents and showed superiority in good passing movements. The Whangarei defence, however, was sound and repeatedly promising movements wore broken up.

After McKay had failed with a penalty, Mangonui attacked, Cosson being forced out near the corner. Morgan opened up a nice passing movement for Mangonui, the attack failing in the home quarter. McKay stemmed another determined Mangonui attack. With time nearly due, Smith had two opportunities to equalise. He missed with a penalty kick, but the defence had moved up and he was given another chance, again failing. McDonald made a quick dash down? the wing, but the defence covered, and the whistle •ame without further score.
