After a trial match had been played at Simson Park. Moerewa, on Saturday. the selectors, Messrs. T. L. G. Johnson, L. R. Middleweek and T- J. V. 'Dunlop, junr., selected the following team to represent the Bay of Islands third grade 'against Whangarei on Saturday:

Half-back: Readdy (Moerewa). Five-eighths: Sanders and P. Smith (Kaikohe District High). Three-quarters: R. Yorke (Kaikohe District High). Cherrington, Leaity (Kawakawa District High), J. B. Te Haara (Ngawha). Emergencies—Backs; Fou (Kaikohe District High). Forwards: Brydon (Taumarere),
The Game,
As there is no third grade competition in the Bay apart from the school teams, it was extremely hard to organise the trial match, but players available were soon placed in two groups, those from the Kaikohe district and those from Kawakawa.
During the first spell the Kawakawa district players were superior, although no sensational play was produced by either side.
The field was dry when the game commenced, and the backs saw plenty of the ball, but towards the end of the first spell a heavy shower made conditions rather treacherous, and the game changed to an unspectacular forward exhibition. A fairly large crowd was present, despite the dismal conditions. In the second half, the Kaikohe district team played more consistently than in the first half, with the result that the selected team has eleven players from the Kaikohe district, and four from the Kawakawa area.
Mr Dunlop refereed the match, in which there was no score.
“Cissy” Controversy Revived After Result
[Special to “Northern Advocate ” 3 AUCKLAND, This Day.
The Rugby writer of the “New Zealand Herald,” in the course of his comment on the North Auckland-Auckland
game, says
“The general play of the Auckland team did not contain the sparkle usually associated with its exhibitions. The work of the forwards lacked aggressiveness, while the backs did not display their usual understanding .and combination. The passing especially was faulty. “One cannot help, in some measure, attributing the entire exhibition of the team to the fact that the players had had only .a brief spell after having journeyed for five hours in a motor bus.
“This is in no way detracting from the merits of North Auckland’s win, as the home team may have been successful in any circumstances.
“However, it would have been fairer for the Aucklanders for them to have had a good rest before meeting such a combination on its own grounds.”
