Old Boys Down City a Second Time

Fading sadly in the second spelt, after having taken the initiative until half-time. City unexpectedly fell a second time to Old Boys. Ron Ross, the City coach and ex-Al! Black trialist, who wont on to replace O’Hagan early in the game, himself was injured when, in the last minute of the game, ho fell heavily in a tackle, fracturing the point of his right shoulder blade.

Callanan, who had made a rush trip from Invercargill to lead his team, saw to it that his backs had plenty of the ball in the first, half. Green sent many nice movements away, and once, when he punted over the heads of the opposing backs, all 30 players on the field were running the same way, Grant doubled round well to retrieve, run strongly and clear. Roos set up a barrage of kicks at goal, included among his misses being two fairly easy ones. However, he piloted two across, the second being a beauty right from the sideline. Throughout the half, City looked much more dangerous than their opponents. G. Abbott, Ross, Taylor and Conaghan all figured in one clever move. Ross was perfectly placed for a score, but could not gather an overhead in-pass from the winger. Force Missed—A Try.

The only try of the half was one which met with a mixed reception although it was perfectly in order. Following an , intercept by Campbell, the ball was kicked over the City line. Taylor ran to force, brushing the bail but failing to steady it. Through a bunch of City men, N. Saul darted to press down and be awarded a score. Masters converted, and at the interval City led G—ls. Led by Ross, City attacked hotly and Green, having eliminated two opponents, was heading into almost an open field when Grant overhauled him from behind.

Pushing by Farmer gave Hoos another chance, the ball hitting the bar and bouncing over the scoring side. Old Boys Take Lead. A moment later Farmer retrieved his mistake, sending Alison away in a likely run, but Conaghan ran across fast to defend. Saul again came into the picture when he darted through the City backs. „From a loose scrum Hansen worked the blind to Grant, to Campbell, who came round to make the extra man and score in the corner. Taylor's failure to force let Old Boys in for two quick trios. Alison gathered in one kick gnd shook off a tackle for Saul to take the pass-and fly over. With Old Boys two points ahead, Masters missed a hard one, but, when Taylor kicked weakly from behind his own goal line again, the North Auckland skipper seized the opportunity to pot a goal, the kick reaching a great altitude.

Towards the end Old Boys were definitely on top, and Foote and Whiteman were unlucky not to add further points. Mr F. Williams refereed.
