'Karamea’s Great Bid v. Hikurangi

One of the best club games of the season was provided by Hikurangi and Maungakaramea on No. 2 ground at Kensington Park and the leader in the senior competition had difficulty in withstanding Maungakaramea’s challenge, succeeding in winning by only the odd point in 33. The game had not been in progress more than three minutes when Cunningham flashed down the line to score a try which White failed to convert and give Hikurangi a three points lead. A minute later Cunningham again went .away but Amos, the opposing ftdl-back. made no mistake and White, who was in support, was robbed of a try. White, however, secured his three points with a penalty kick which followed and Hikurangi was six points in the lead. Maungakaramea Opens. Holding ,on in the face of Maungakaramea pressure cost Hikurangi a penalty, Nash failing with a good attempt from well out. Play ranged the field for a period with little advantage to either side, but then White sent away Cunningham who out-paced the field. When faced by Amos lie attempted to sell a dummy despite plenty of support and another chance was lost. Nash shaved a goal-post with a penalty against Hikurangi and Maungakaramea kept up the'pressure. Robison being hauled down within inches of the line after a fine passing rush instituted by Nash. Another penalty against Hikurangi gave M. Morresey a chance, a great effort from near the side-line not being sucessful. Nash failed with another penalty and pressure compelled Hikurangi to touch down. M. Morresey who shortly before had missed with a penalty from half-way had another shot, this time from a few yards nearer, and was successful. —Hikurangi 6, Maungakaramoa 3.

Maungakaramea In Lead. Hackett, the Maungakaramea halfback, cut through nicely and set the backs in motion, the defence holding on the line. Hackett endeavoured to force his way over from the following scrum but was held up. McNeill carried on and scored for Nash to convert. Half-time came, after Hikurangi had again been compelled to toutih down, with the score: Maungakaramea 8, Hikurangi 6. Maungakaramea continued the pressure following the interval and M. Morresey went close with a penalty from 15 yards inside half-way. Hikurangi forcing. Hikurangi took a turn in the attack and Myers missed with an attempted field goal. Maungakaramea set up another hot attack but was penalised. Amos returned the kick and M. Morresey kicked through and followed up fast to score behind the posts. He converted his own try and the score was: Maungakaramea 13, Hikurangi 6. Shortly afterwards when Hikurangi was attacking, offside gave White a shot from a handy position and he raised the flags.—Maungakaramea 13. Hikurangi 9.

Scores About Face. Harvey, Maungakaramea wing, came through with a nice dribbling rush but ended by kicking too hard and Myers won the race for the ball to force. Hikurangi attacked, Cunningham kicking through and following fast to beat the defence in a scramble for the ball. White made a fine ’ effort from the side-line but missed. —Maungakaramea 13, Hikurangi 12. With only a point separating the two teams bright football was provided and play ranged between the two quarters at a fast clip. White and M. Morresey both missed with penalty kicks from difficult angles and then the Hikurangi backs swung away for White to finish with a great run which took him over the goal-line and round to score behind the posts. He converted his own try.—Hikurangi 17, Maungakaramea 13. With the change in the lead, Maungakaramea pressed solidly and Hikurangi touched down. The pressure was maintained and the defence was penalised, M. Morfessy raising the flags from an easy position. The last few moments were packed v/ith incident and while Maungakaramca looked like scoring Hikurangi also went very close but the game ended without further score.—Hikurangi 17. Maungakaramea IG. Mr Eevington was the referee.
