Railway Porter Awarded £l2oo Damages

A former railway porter, Herbert Lawrence Coughlan, was awarded £202 special and £IOOO general damages in an action brought against the, Crown in the Supreme Court yesterday. The claim arose out of a shunting accident in the Timaru railway yards, on May 23, 1938, in which Coughlan had his right foot run over and lost four toes and part of the fifth toe. Coughlan was in hospital for five months, and off work for a year, and has a permanent disability. On recovery, the Railway Department had given him a position as a clerk.
