Ladies’ Committee To Assist Orphanage Board
A ladies’ committee has been appointed to assist the Tikipunga Orphanage Board of Trustees. At the board meeting yesterday, the ladies’ committee was .appointed as follows: Mesdames M. Staple, H. W. Crawford, T. J. Griffin and W. Orr. The ladies have been given power to add to their number. It was stated that the Orphanage is rapidly reaching completion and arrangements are in hand for the laying of a suitably-inscribed foundation stone. A telegram from the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, indicated his willingness to lay the foundation stone, though the date proposed was not suitable. Fixing of the date was deferred until further word from the Minister has been received. Yesterday members of the ladies’ committee were taken over the orphanage building, in the course of construction. Their suggestion that the present coal stove be replaced with an electric stove is receiving the favourable consideration of the board of trustees, which has instructed its .architect to fully into the matter. The ladies’ committee will interest itself in the raising of additional finance for furnishing, and in every way co-operate with the board of trustees, particularly when the matter of staffing the orphanage is undertaken. The committee will hold a further meeting to discuss important matters, in the Town Hall supper room on July 23.
