Whangarei District Centennial History
An indication of the work which is to be done by the Historical Committee of Sub-Zone A 5 of the Northland Centennial organisation, was given by the sub-committee chairman, Mr E. L. Whimp, on Wednesday. He was speaking at the gathering to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the erection of the Maungatapere Public Hall. Once the Queen Carnival was over, said Mr Whimp, it was the intention of the sub-committee to set up smaller committees in an endeavour to gather data for the compilation of a history of Whangarei district. It was known that there were num-i erous records, manuscripts, articles and photographs of valuable historical interest in various homes, and it was hoped to secure the use of these for the purpose, he said. The chairman of the Zone A Centennial Committee, Mr W. Jones, Mayor of Whangarei, and Messrs. J. A. S. Mac Kay and H. W. Crawford, all emphasised the importance of the coming Centennial celebrations in Northland, and expressed the hope that full advantage would be taken of them to accord due honour and tribute to the pioneers who had done so much to lay the foundations of the progress, the benefit of which was now being reaped.
