WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Maunu The .day was beautifully fine on Thursday last, when the Maunu Women’s Institute held their 11th birthday. Mrs Griffin presided over a large number of members and their friends, there being ten Institutes represented. The afternoon opened by singing the W.I. song, “Comrades and Friends.” After the business was dealt with, the party took the form of a social afternoon, with musical and elocutionary items by Mrs Joyce, Miss Hayward, Mrs Cartwright, Mrs Ross, Mrs Simmons and Miss Chambers. It was proposed to link up with a Maori W.I. at Ohaeawai, A short play was given by the members of the W. 1., and was greatly enjoyed. Mrs Ross, the president of the Whangarei Federation, was present and gave a short talk on Institute affairs, afterwards cutting the birthday cake, which was made by Mrs Snell and iced by Mrs Douglas Wilson. Afternoon tea and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. Mangapai The July meeting of the Mangapai Institute was fairly well attended, Miss Holmes presiding. After business was discussed, the roll-call, “The silliest thing I ever did” or “Who I would like to be and why,” caused great amusement. An interesting talk on Switzerland was given by Mrs Dorehill, of Maunu. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames W. A. Thomson and Jas. Graham. A trading stall did brisk business, with Mrs Webb in charge.
