On Monday evening the literary ! circle of the Whangarei Women's Chib Iheld an open night when four one-act | plays were presented—‘ -It.’s Autumn | Now,” by Philip Johnson; ”A Table Set for Two,” by Sacha Guitry”; “Johnson Was No Gentleman,” by A. F. Rubinstein; “Tangled Skeins,” by Hermon Old. Those who took parts in these plays were Mesdames W. L. Booth. F. Walton, E. Dyer, Marsden Woods, Misses L. and M. Broughton Carr, W. E. Lamb and Joan Geissler.

Mrs A, H. Crane, the president, who was wearing vieux rose lace, received the guests, while the convener, Mrs C. Woolley, chose black flowered taffeta. Mr and Mrs Otway, who are leaving shortly for Tauranga, have been farewelled by their friends at a number of parties. One of the nicest of these was given by Mrs Henderson and Mrs Barry at the former’s' residence in Hhtea Street. The drawing room was charmingly decorated with bowls of autumn tinted leaves and some of the guests were Mr and Mrs Gilbertson, Mr and Mrs Joseph Mackie, Mrs Ray Dempster, Mrs J, Collins and Miss Wilson.

Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Joseph Mackie were other hostesses for Mr and Mrs Otway. Bridge tables were set at Mrs W. A. Christiansen's home on Wednesday evening when she entertained a number of friends, among whom were Mesdames Joseph Mackie, Stewart, Rolfe-Smith, R. K. Trimmer, G. M. Robertson, D. J. Goodwin, G. W. Bennett, W. T. Surman, Spencer Day, A. H. Crane, Misses W. E. Lamb and Joan Mirrielees. \

Despite the very disappointing weather one of the nicest of dances was held in the Purua Hall on Thursday evening, and many visitors from surrounding districts braved the elements to be present. The guests were

bidden to wear dresses of the Victorian era and some lovely crinolines and bustles were worn. The piece de resistance was worn by . Mrs C. G. Stifle—a lovely lavender heavy silk

On Thursday the Rotarians entertained the Rotary Anns with a social evening in the Nok Nok. The president, Mr T. J. Griffin, and Mrs Griffin, who was wearing a gown of delft blue lace, welcomed the guests. Some of those who gave items were Mr A. P.
