Chemical Workers Prepared For Indefinite Strike
(Per Press Association. Copyright! AUCKLAND, Tuesday. If the employers refuse to negotiate, the 400 strikers at the three chemical works are prepared to remain,on strike indefinitely, according to a statement made to-day by Mr W. Miller, secretary of the Otahuhu Chemical Manure Workers’ Union, after a meeting of the executive. The statement added that, the) offer made by the workers on June 27j to meet the employers to negotiate for a settlement, still stood, hut so far no suggestions had been made by. the other side that they were prepared to accept the offer. Workers state that they are anxious to settle the dispute, as they have no wish to inconvenience farmers or other users of fertilisers. They invite any impartial investigation of the conditions under which they work, feeling that the complaint is intolerable and can be substantiated. The employers met informally yesterday, but had no statement to' make. • Reaffirmation of their intention to “see the thing through this time,” was expressed today by workers, who are among the 400 involved in the strike at the chemical manure works at Otahuhu, Westfield and Te Papapa. The strike began a week ago today, following a stopwork meeting.
