Fiction Broadcast Causes Minor War Scare
Reminiscent of the war panic created in America a few months ago, when H. G. Wells’ “Shape of Things To Come” was broadcast, was the experience of quite a number of listeners last evening, when the serial broadcast of “Soldier of Fortune” was being given from 3YA. No doubt the tension regarding international affairs w.as largely responsible, but when a stern masculine voice was heard to say, after a short break in the serial, “The Ministry of War anounces that a state of war has been proclaimed, and all soldiers on leave have been ordered to report for immediate duty,” many listeners thought war had come at last.
It was only .another moment, however, before liseners realised, when the theme of the serial was resumed, that the announcement was only part of the play, but by that time many a heart had beat faster, to be followed by many a sigh of relief that the dreaded moment was only fiction.
