Waikari Maoris May Revert To Tin-Openers
LSpecial to “Northern Advocate ”] KAWAKAWA, This Day.
“When an overseer, nurse or medical practitioner has occasion to visit this settlement, we have to provide horses, as we could not expect them to trudge through the germ-infested slush and stagnant pools of green filth, breeding T.B. “You are also aware of the broken leg cases which went to the hospital from here, and how our wee ones are returning home from school like a pack of spotted leopards. We do not want to keep our children home in place of exercising their brains at cchocl, neither do we wish to revert to the tin-opener in place of the milking machine.” These pungent references were contained in a letter from 81 Maoris, asking the Bay of Islands County Council yesterday to give attention to the imperative need for finalising their access and completing the road up Waikari Valley. Unless the road was completed, the petitioners stated, they would have to turn out their cows and keep their children home from school. The county engineer, Mr S. B. Clifford, stated that arrangements with the Native Department having been finalised, proposals for the work were to be prepared at an early date.
