Australians Defeat Mexicans
DAVIS CUP TENNIS
(Received 3 p.m.) MEXICO CITY, July 2. The Australian tennis team, consisting of Jack Bromwich and Adrian Quist, won the Davis Cup tie with Mexico today by gaining an easy victory in the doubles. The result of the match was: Bromwich and Quist beat D. Hernandez and Reyes (Mexico), B—6, 6—o, 6—l. The Mexicans shone only once, that being in the first set, when the games were evened after the Australians had led at 4 —l, largely due to Hernandez’s temporary brilliance ' and Bromwich’s weak service. The Mexicans held the Australians to 5—5 and 6—6, but the Australian pair then crushed them with devastating smashes and net-work. The Mexicans made only nine points in the second set, and constantly drove into the net. In the final set, the Australians easily out-manoeuvred, and Bromwich repeatedly killed easy balls at the net. The Mexicans won the fifth game after deuces. In commenting on the result, Harry Hopman, the Australian captain, said: “We have done what was expected of us. So far there is really nothing for which we can pat ourselves on the back, and our tests are yet to come. Perhaps it was fortunate that Quist had his setback this year so early. Now we can look forward to a bit of luck.”
In exhibition matches, J. Crawford (Australia) beat H. Hopman (Australia) 7 —5, and Hopman and the 15-year-old Mexican boys’ champion, Armando Vega, beat Crawford and the Mexican Davis Cup substitute, Ignacio de la Borbolla, 3—6, 6—l, 6 —5.
