Anglo-U.S. LongRange Naval Blockade Of Japan
NEW YORK, June 26
Official circles, according to the New York “Daily News,” are seriously discussing an Anglo-American long-range naval blockade “as a means of filing down the Japanese military caste to its proper proportions.” The newspaper adds that the United States and Britain may be forced into such action soon.
Editorially, the “Daily News” advocates a blockade outside the lines of maximum Japanese effectiveness, with the United States fleet based at Hawaii, as the Philippine Islands are too close to the Japanese bases. “We note the comment that we are proposing that this country should do work for Britain that Britain cannot do alone,” says the paper. “We are thinking first and last of the United States. In this instance, the interests of America and England, possessing the world’s largest navies, run pretty much together.”
The press is giving prominence to detailed despatches from China, and the indignities upon foreigners are warmly resented. There is speculation as to the effect the . Eastern developments may have on the Neutrality Bill. Administration leaders are confident it will be passed when it is introduced in the House on Tuesday. The opposition group, however, expects to secure the re-insertion of the automatic amis embargo clause.
