Sickness Benefit: Early Application Required
I [Per Press Association. - Copyright .l | WELLINGTON. This Day. Many persons entitled to sickness benefit under the Social Security Act are stated to be delaying applications for the benefit until some time after they become incapacitated for work . j The result is that they may not qualify for the same amount of benefit they might otherwise have received had their applications been lodged im- ! mediately on becoming sick, j The Acting-Minister of Social Security, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said yesterday that it was important for a person jwho wished to take full advantage the provisions of the Act for sickness
benefit to make immediate application for the benefit at the beginning of the period of temporary incapacity. Mr. Parry said that where an applicant was unable to complete the form of application, there was no objection to a relative or friend completing the form on his behalf.
Up to May 27 there were 1,201 persons in receipt of the sickness benefit. Since April 1, Mr. Parry estimated that at least 4,000 people had received sickness benefit out of the Social Security Fund.
