OBITUARY
The death of Mr Peter Jones oe | curred at his residence “Cairnneld,” | Whangarei, this morning. I Born in County Cowan, Ireland, 80 j years ago. the late Mr Jones came to I New Zealand with his parents in the j sailing ship Helvellyn
arriving in
Auckland on July 14. 18C3. His father took up land in the Arapohue district, Northern Wairoa, where, after a time the family joined him, and, for many years experienced with the other settlers, the hardships of early pioneering days. Later the family moved to the Waikato but, after some years, Mr Jones returned to the Northern Wairoa district, taking up a block of land known as the Strathmore estate.
Mr Jones was largely engaged in timber workings, being associated with the Kauri Timber Company for some years and later on his own behalf.
In 1894 he married Margaret Sutherland. of Waipu, who predeceased him nearly eight years ago. In the year 19C8 they came to Whangarei, taking up residence at Cairnfield. where the family has since resided.

Always interested in the vrelfare of his fellow citizens the late Mr Jones served for a period on the Hobson County Council, and also the Whangarei Borough Council. Known for his integrity and his generous response to those in trouble he will be missed by a wide circle of relatives and friends.
He is survived by one son, Hugh, of Hamilton, and three daughters, Gladys, Hazel .and Irene, of Whangarei. Sister Alphonsus, of St. Benedict’s Convent, Auckland, is his only surviving sister, his brothers being Messrs William and Michael, of Auckland, and Thomas and Frank, of Dargaville.
