Penalties Give City Lucky Win
Fielding their strongest team to date, Kamo put up a splendid performance; against City, particularly in the first half when their backs handled as if the ball was dry.
Te Pa'a, hooking the ball from Cunliffe, gave the backs an early opportunity to prove their combination, the ball travelling right along the chain to Symes, who put in a good fun before being downed. From a ruck, C. White threw a long transfer to C. Brown, who hesitating, lost an opportunity, but lined to retrieve. Again the backs handled for Rewa to gain ground and send to winger Brown, to C. White, who fell to a good tackle. When Cunliffe handled offside, Ferguson made a poor attempt at goal.
Four Abbotts Play.
City, who had started with four members of the Abbott family in the backline, soon lost Charlie, playing his first game in Whangarei. Ha went off with 'a face injury, to be replaced at full-back by R. Ross, whose coolness, and line-kicking ability was to stand his side in good stead. Bennett relieved a series of Kamo sieges, and Hale Abbott found a gap in Kamo’s formation. Cleverly tricking his opposing winger, Brown, with a change in pace, Taylor sprinted past him, but the pass to George Abbott was ruled forwards, depriving Ctiy of a certain try.
For Kamo, Charlie White was giv Trig one of his best displays and the ■heavy Maori Ail Black went away in a nice, in and out passing move with Skelton. With a long kick, Terry Abbott repulsed the attack, but Kamo was quick to develop another one. Brown coming across from his wing to form an extra back, and the movement again being terminated by solid tackling after the Avhole chain had participated. Tipped. The Crossbar.
City fonvards at last asserted themselves, and when Kamo was penalised, Boos, from the sideline and outside the 25 yards nvark, landed a sensational goal, the ball touching the crossbar in its flight. This gave City the lead in a half during which Kamo had been definitely superior.
Equalising points soon came when the teams turned round, Cam Brown, reappearing as five-eighths for Kamo, completing a fine 'dribbling rush. M. Rika missed the kick and it was 3—3. Hushing play to City's territory again, several Kamo forwards smothered Ross, the full-back being penalised for holding when it would have beeh difficult for him to got rid of the ball. Skelton’s kick, from an easy position, never left the ground.
Ross Finds The Line.
A liner by Ross was worth 40 yards to City, and H. and T. Abbott also got useful defensive punts away. Inexplicably, Callanan was failing to find the line with penalties, causing his forwards much unnecessary work.'
Winger Brown was well placed for a run in when he misfielded. At this stage, Clotworthy went off with a knee injury, being replaced by Fairley. Improving as the game progressed, City gradually assumed the offensive, Callanan leading a telling forward rush with Taylor, Bennett and Provan co-operating well. There was great excitement when Terry Abbott landed a penalty for City, giving his side the lead, G—. 3. Shortly afterwards, Monday Pika had a chance to retaliate, but his kick from a more difficult angle, was a poor one. For the last few minutes there was hectic give and take without any side gaining a material advantage. Mr Bovington refereed.
