TURF GOSSIP

Additions to Eilerslie Stables. Additions to Ivan Tucker’s stable at Eilerslie last week were High Tea and Ivy Willonyx. It is intended to try High Tea as a jumper. Change of Quarters. Recent recruits to J. M-. Buchanan's stable at Eilerslie are Orate and Trilliarch. Orate was purchased for 50 guineas by Mr J. C. Edmonds at the thoroughbred sale last week. Condition of F. Foster. When F. Foster fell from his mount, Right Royal, at the Eilerslie meeting last Monday, it was thought that he had sustained nothing worse than concussion. It is now learnt, as the result of an X-ray examination, that lie has a fracture of the skull. His condition is satisfactory

Holiday Trip to Australia. The Auckland jockeys R. W. McTavish. G. Cameron, R. E. Horne and A. G. Murrayleft on Friday by the Monterey for Sydney, where they intend spending a few weeks' holiday. The Auckland sportsman, Mr C. M. Emanuel, owner of Aero King, also left by the Monterey to spend a short holiday in Australia.

Jockeys’ Earnings at Ellcrslio. The winning ride of A. E. Ellis on Survey earned him £lO3/10/-. A. Jenkins, as the most successful rider at the meeting, drew' the biggest cheque. On the first day his earnings were £146 16/-, on the second day £64 16/-, and five losing rides on the final day added £ 24/16/—a grand total of £236 8/-.

Leading Jockey. W. J. Broughton, with 71 winning rides to his credit this season, is assured of the jockeys’ premiership for 1938-39. The season does not close until the end of July, but in the remaining few weeks, with all the meetings featuring a bigger proportion of jumping events, the chances of H. N. Wiggins, Broughton’s nearest rival, overtaking him are remote. Wiggins's total for the season is 63.

Novices for Tanranga. Two Takanini novices likely to fulfil engagements at the Tauranga meeting next Saturday, at Nordic Song and Miss Valerie, both from E. Pope’s stable. Nordic Song ran good races at Ellerslie, and his form was encouraging, while Miss Valerie, who has not raced since competing at the Whangarei meeting, has been going along nicely in the interim. Will do Better. Failure to begin correctly was the cause of Saccone’s failure at the recent Ellerslie meeting. This gelding was badly left in the Carbine Plate, and stood the field up a big start. He put in a great claim down the straight, and was narrowly beaten out of a place. With an even getaway he must have been very hard to beat, but ne should soon redeem himself, particuIrly in distance hack events.
