Brilliant ’Chaser Offered For £lo, But Refused

There was general satisfaction at Ellerslie when Bridegroom won the Hunt Club Hurdles and the Hunt Club Cup, but there was at least one man who must have had a pang of disappointment when he heard the result. He is a resident of Gisborne; a Maori. Not so very long ago, he had an idea that he would like to own a racehorse. ’‘Why not Bridegroom?” a friend asked him. “You can get him for £lo.’ The Maori was duly impressed, and confirmed the fact that he could become a racehorse owner for such a nominal sum. Then he saw the horse. He had another think. And, after all. a tenner was a tenner: a horse not necessarily a winner. Hori called the deal off. Thus it came about that Bridegroom went into the stable of L. Knapp, who recommended him to Mr K. McK. Duncan, his present owner. Mr Duncan, who is a successful amateur rider, thinks highly of the son of Mimetic and Bridal Veil, and it is quite probable, that Bridegroom will be taken to Australia to compete in big jumping events there. The Maori is now a sadder, but no wiser, man. Preparing for Spring Racing. The Ricacrton trainer, F. D. Jones, has brought in Royal Chief, Moorsolis and Prudent Prince, to begin their preparations for spring racing.
