Cocos Island Would Be Valuable Air Base
SYDNEY, June 10. The Commonwealth correspondent aboard the survey flying boat, Cuba, now at Cocos Island, reports that a ground survey of Horesburgh Island revealed a site for a splendid natural aerodrome, on which a fair amount of money must bo spent to bring it up to aviation requirements. However, all the material required for runways is near at hand.
Captain Taylor considers that, although the passenger-carrying ocean aircraft of the future will be large flying-boats, it is quite possible that mails may be carried by land aircraft cruising at a high speed. Therefore an aerodrome at Cocos Island is a matter of considerable importance commercially, and would be of great value in air force operations. Subject to the completion of the survey at Cocos Island, which is at present proceeding, the Cuba will leave for Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, on Monday, a distance of 1470 miles. The journey is expected to take about 15 hours.
