The traditional ceremony of assembling “round the stone” took place at the “Northern Advocate" office on Thursday at mid-day, when the staff fare welled one of their members, Mrs L. Crawford, on the eve of her retirement. Mrs Crawford was in charge of the proofreading department of the “Advocate” for the past fifteen years, and also filled the position of lady editor. Her departure is much regretted by the staff, who, as a mark of their appreciation of her association with the office, presented her with a handsome dressing table set. The presentation was made by the editor, Mr Inkster, and the sentiments of the different departments were voiced by Messrs George (news), Skinner (linotypes), Horne (jobbing), Crawford (commercial) and Dunn (literary). The ladies of the staff also presented Mrs Crawford with a powder compact, which was given to her by Miss Hilder. All the speakers paid tribute to the sterling service Mrs Crawford had rendered in the work of producing the newspaper and also to the valued help she had given in promoting the social life of the staff. Earlier in the day the members of the literary staff entertained Mrs Crawford to morning tea.
