Manufacturers Have Difficulty In Fulfilling Orders
-SAYS SHOE RETAILER
Although last month was a record for sales since she established business twelve months ago, Mrs J. Spark, of Hikurangi. said that she had turned away twice as many customers as she was able to fit out with shoes.
This, she said, was due to the inability of New Zealand manufacturers to supply orders as quickly as they were required.
Three months ago she had ordered from an Auckland firm 40 pairs of shoes.
This week she received only eight pairs as part of her order. These were obtained only after p or.si sten t correspon donee. She was told by one traveller that his firm had instructed him not to go further north than Whangarci for orders, because their plant was working to full capacity and the firm had difficulty in supplying orders already obtained.
Another traveller informed her that his firm was six months behind with orders and it was useless him accepting business unless the customer were prepared to wait several months for the stock to be supplied. One Northern retailer had offered to pay cash up to £30(1 if an order but this had to be turned down, the
could be fulfilled within a short time, traveller had said.
Mrs Spark understood that opei'atives were being obtained from overseas and this should ease manufacturers’ difficulties so far as labour is concerned, though plants would have do be extended to cope with the greater demand for New Zealand products that has come about as the result of the import restrictions.
