5/- Tote For Race Patrons Advocated
[Per Press Association. Copyright.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Maintaining that the present minimum investment of 10/- on the totalisator was too high for many followers of racing, the honorary treasurer of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Mr George Gould, expressed the opinion, at the annual meeting yesterday, that the New Zealand Racing Conference should insist on facilities being provided for a minimum investment of 5/-.
Although no decision was reached at the meeting, Mr Gould's suggestion received no criticism, and those who commented on it' expressed their approval.
Present Minimum Too High
‘One thing I am sure of,” Mr Gould said. “The minimum stake of 10/- on the totalisator is too high for many of our patrons. I think the Racing Conference should insist on facilities being provided for a 5/- minimum.
“We have only to look to England and Australia for guidance on this question. I do not want to interfere with the man who wants to invest £5, but we should provide for the people who want to risk only 5/-. “We should lose something in net revenue, but not as much as may be thought. It would be immensely popular, and wo should gain in attendances. There are difficulties, but where there is a will there is n way.”
