W ELLINGTON, Wednesday,
, A fortnight in New Zealand has been enough for two Englishmen and their wives who came here with the intention of settling.
They left again by the Romuera from Wellington this afternoon in a state, to use their own words, “of disillusionment and disgust.” They were Mr and Mrs C. Perks, and Mr and Mrs W. A. Walton.
The Waltons had two children, aged
12 and six years. Mrs H. Harvey, who saw them off, also arrived with her husband and two children a fortnight ago.
She said berths were not available for them, or they, too, would have been returning to England. Though the difficulty of securing somewhere to live had been the chief one confronting the three families, they expressed themselves disgusted at living costs generally.
They wore attracted by the publicity matter issued through agents by New Zealand House, London, painting a bright picture of conditions in the Dominion and containing no warning of the housing shortage. Mr Porks said he thought of buying a house, but, after being shown some at about £2OOO, which he could match in England for £SOO, he gave it up.
