Whangarei Inquiries For National Military Reserve
A steady stream of inquiries from men intending to offer their services in the National Military Reserve has been received at both the Whangarei Post Office and the Army Office in the past two days. Men offering their services will bt classified for the nature of service for which they are best fitted, according to age, whether married or single, number of dependants, past naval, army or air service, professional or trade qualifications, and will be notified in which class of the Reserve they have been posted. The Reserve will consist of three classes.
Class 1 will contain men of the ages of 20 to 35 years who have served during peace time for not less than two years in the New Zealand Territorial Army or any of the military forces of the Empire. They arc required to build the Territorial Army to war strength on mobilisation and to furnish reinforcements for the Territorial Army after mobilisation.
Returned Soldiers. Class 2 will be composed of returned soldiers and ex-regulars between the ages of 35 and 55 years. They are required to augment fortress troops at the main ports, to provide garrisons at the secondary ports, to protect vital points, to fill administrative and train-
ing appointments on mobilisation, and to provide a reserve to Class 1. Class 3 will be formed of men of the ages of 36 to 55 years other than those eligible for registration in Class 2. These men will be required to form a reserve to Classes 1 and 2, to provide a general reserve from which various units such as defence works, construction companies, etc., will be formed, and for any other purpose for which their services may be required.
Those Not Eligible. The following are not eligible for enrolment in the reserve, and therefore should not fill in cards: —Royal Fleet reservists, Royal Naval reservists (Now Zealand Division), Royal Naval volunteer reservists (New Zealand Division), pensioners of the Royal Navy, members of the New Zealand Territorial Air Force (Army), members of the Royal New Zealand Territorial Air Force, members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Reserve, members of the Ro3 T al New Zealand Air Force Civil Reserve, members of the Civil Reserve of Air Pilots, members of the Now Zealand Police Force.
Territorials Wanted
Men of the ages of 20 to 32 years inclusive, who have not completed during peace time a period of two years’ service in the New Zealand Territorial Army,' or in any of the military forces of the Empire, cannot join the reserve. As they are eligible for service in the New Zealand Territorial Army, they should enlist in one of the local Territorial units, states an official circular. If there is not a vacancy in the appropriate unit, the names of those offering their services will bo recorded on a wailing list and vacancies will be tilled therefrom as they occur.
