Paihia Battling Shed Is Not Suitable Memorial
“Faihia calls for a memorial more worthy than a tin bathing shed,” was j the comment made by Mr K. Usmar, ' one of the two joint permanent Cen- j tennial secretaries, when speaking at the Auckland Provincial Council |
Executive meeting in Whangarei on | Saturday night. Mr Usmar was referring to an application for a memorial on the Paihia foreshore to bo provided by the Bay of Islands County Council, and to consist of a two-cOmpartment bathing shed costing £75. The application was declined. Several oilier applications for approval submitted by the Bay of Islands Sub-zone woi’e also not approved of by the executive. First of these was for the construction at Tautoro ot a native meeting house. It was explained by Mr Usmar that five natives had made an application on behalf of the residents. The suggestion was not considered by the secretaries to bo suitable for a memorial. Must Have General Interest. Another suggestion was for extending and remodelling the hall and and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Awarua at a cost of £l7O. Mr J. W. Heenan, Under-Secretary for the Department of Internal Affairs, remarked that the National Council would not approve memorials for only sectional purposes. A second request for church purposes was for the erection at Maromaku of an assembly hall for the same denomination. The cost would be £BOO. but the application was declined.
Erection of a native meeting house at Kaikou was also not upheld by the executive.
“We found that, in reality, this application no more related to a native meeting house than this room,” said Mr Usmar. “It is for a native dining room.”
