Whangarei's Proposals

Whangarei’s (Sub-Zone A 5) recommendations concerning Mair Park, Hora Hora Park and Kensington Park were approved of, while the Onerahi Town Board’s suggested renovation of the old Maori pa and the Whangarei County Council’s scheme for planting and fencing trees on beaches and parks, etc., were also favourably considered. Schemes submitted by Whangarei were, in detail.— (a) Acquisition, at an estimated cost of £4OO, of an area of three acres adjoining Maif Park, and its improvement, at an estimated cost of £450, for the provision of a modern motor camp and public reserve to be known as “William Jones Park,” and the erection thereon, at an estimated cost of £2300 of a modern one-storey and a half Community centre building. Provision is to be made for sleeping and dressing accommodation, with cooking and shower facilities. Total estimated cost, £3150. (b) Replanning of Hora Hora Park by carrying out levelling to an estimated cost of £450; by providing a Rugby field-, hockey ground and two basketball courts; by erecting a pavilion with, dressing accommodation for men and women; by providing a children's playground with paddling pools and sand-pit, and other standard equipment; also planting of trees; total estimated cost, £I4OO. (c) Improvement of the layout of Kensington Park by erecting a stone and brick entrance witlrtwo iron gates for traffic and one iron gate for pedestrians; and re-designing the right-of-way and plots to provide for a driveway, flanked on one side by a strip for the planting of shelter trees, and on the other by a kerb, a pathway, and a flower plot; estimated cost, £l5O.

(d) Onerahi Town District.—Acquisition of the old Maori Pa and an area of five acres for recreation ground ,and tree-planting. Estimated cost. £IOO.

fe) Whangarei County.—Planting and fencing of eight domains and reserves. and the planting of nine beach and river frontages. Estimated cost, £825. Total estimated cost, £7765. Included in the total cost was a suggestion for acquiring land and building, and renovation of building, lor use as a Maori hostel, the amount of this being £2140. This matter was deferred for further consideration.
