Philip Henry Kerr, eleventh Marquess of Lothian, who has been appointed British Ambassador to Washington, is a distinguished man of letters as well as prominent in political affairs. Born in 1882, Lord Lothian completed his education at Oxford, and after occupying important secretaryships in connection with South African affairs, became editor of “The State,” South Africa. In 1910 he became editor of the “Round Table,” a position he occupied for six years before spending five years as secretary to the Prime Minister. He was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1931, and since then has occupied important Parliamentary posts.
