Plunket Society’s Animal Report
A successful year was reviewed at the annual meeting of the Hikurangi sub-branch of the Whangarei branch of the Plunket Society. The year had commenced with a credit of £6 4/8 and closed with a credit of £l4 0/7, while membership numbered 27 at the close of the year, said Mrs D. McDonald, president, in her annual report. The report extended thanks to Mrs Stockley and the little members of the “Northern Advocate’s” Kupe Club, who conducted a street stall in aid of branch funds, raising £8 17/-. Thanks were also accorded Mrs Day, who made a decorated cake for competition, which realised £7 8/-. Mrs W. McLeod had also made the gift of a turkey which brought in a handsome return.
Appreciation was expressed of the capable and conscientious manner in which Nurse Thomas had carried out her duties during the year, while Messrs Norman and Sons were thanked for their generosity in conveying Nurse Thomas to and from Hikurangi. Nurse Thomas’s report stated that 24 visits had been made to Hikurangi during the year, and 19 new babies had been attended to, with 11 visits to homes. There had been 44 adult visits tc the office, with 332 babies and 196 older children a total of 972.
Surprise Party For Waro Resident
Mrs. Newby, Waro, received a pleasant surprise on a recent evening when some 20 of her friends arrived unexpectedly to celebrate her birthday. A happy evening was spent in games and whist, in which the men’s prize was won by Mrs. Rowe and the ladies by Mrs. J. Buchanan. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs. A. Donaldson and Mrs. Martin.
In making Mrs. Newby the presentation of a bedroom lamp, Mr. Donaldson expressed to her the best wishes of the gathering, Mr. Summerville responding on behalf of the guest of honour. As the finishing touch to a bright little function, Mrs. S. Robinson and Mr. Summerville caused gales of mirth with their interpretation of the “Lambeth Walk.”
Whist Drive And League Footballers,
To assist the funds of the Hikurangi League Football Club, a successful whist drive was held at the home of Mrs. Garvie, Valley Road, last week. Six tables were occupied and a most pleasant evening resulted, the occasion being sponsored by Mr. J. Crackett. Prize winners were Mrs. Laird and Mr. J. Howie.
New Stationmaster At Hikurangi
Mr. A. T. Bedingfield, formerly of Palmerston North, has commenced duty as stationmaster at the Hikurangi railway station, replacing Mr. M. P. Casey, who has joined the relief staff in the Auckland district.
