Prospects Of Youthful Broadwood Senior Team
• [Special to “Northern Advocate BROADWOOD. Tins Day. ;;; Broadwood Rugby Football Club is .‘ fortunate in having the services of Mr ■u-K. Newman as manager and coach of i- the senior team. Mr Newman is known as the “father ,cf Broadwood football,” and by his enthusiasm has been largely responrisible for the measure of success achieved by the team in the North Hokfanga competitions. f • In his younger days Mr Newman could not afford the time and expense ' to play the game, and now that these obstacles have been removed, he feats he has passed the days for active participation. Fortunately for the Broadwood team he can play a great game from the sideline, and the players alii .ways profit by his encouragement.
Up to Strength.
A few changes have been made in the personnel of the Broadwood team this year, but with a number of representative players still available it will be right up to its previous strength. ' The team is notable for the youthfulness of members, the average ago being about 20 years. Despite their •youth, the players will average about 12 stone in weight.
Those probably taking the field tomorrow will be: —Forwards: Dick Hawkins, a consistent performer of the rugged type excels in the tight; Brian Rogers, a youthful player, but fast and bandy in close work; Bob Ling, captain and North Auckland representative, who hooked against Lotz, of Springbok fame, often beating him for the ball; Bill Reid, a young performer who has played consistently and is expected to show more improvement this year; Ivan Martin, another young player, and probably the fastest forward to step out in the com-
petition; Keith Poison, a newcomer of good physique; Tony Harrfson, Hokianga representative; and Frank Dodds, a good average player.
Representative Back Division.
In the backs, the half will be the Hokianga representative, Mick Edwards, who can always bo relied upon for a sound game. The five-eighths line will be filled by Des Young, another representative, and Si'd Welsh, a youthful player who is not yet up to senior standard, but who can be. expected to improve with experience. The wings will be Les Gray, who is fast and a good kick, but erratic at times, and Ike Harrison, a fast representative player, who will again be exploiting Ins favourite lob kick to advantage. The centre will be Major Fell, who produces a good solid game and sprints well. At full-back will be Tommy Butler. Although only 15 years of age, this boy is a first-class full-back.
The juniors will be guided by Mr Bob McFarland, a teacher at Tutekehua, and an ex- ? Varsity and Auckland representative. The junior team emulates the seniors in its youthfulness, the average age of the boys being 15 years.
