Great Possibilities In A. And P. Society’s “New Home”

Negotiations have been completed between the Whangarei A. and P. Society and the Whangarei Harbour Board for a lease by the former body of an area of reclaimed land suitable for a now Showgrounds and sports park. The area comprises some 16 acres, and adjoins the Public Works garage in Hannah Street, extending to the Town Wharf Basin towards the point known as the Bluff. Lease in Perpetuity. ’ A lease in perpetuity of the area has been taken by the A. and P. Society, which assumes possession of the land as from May 1. The scheme for financing new buildings—explained at the last Winter Exhibition —will now be proceeded with. “It is anticipated that with the assistance of everybody within the district fhe new scheme will be sufficiently far advanced to enable the holding of the Centennial Exhibition in June, 1940, in the new buildings on the new site,” said Mr C. P. Butler, secretary of the society. Situated in the heart of a fast-grow-ing town, the newly-acquired area has vast possibilities. When fully developed, it will be a serious rival to the civic parks, and will provide another “breathing space” for Northland’s premier town.

“It is sincerely to be hoped that the business people and I’esidents of Whangarei will now lend their co-oper-ation to the society to see that this ambitious scheme, which has been undertaken for the benefit of the community as a whole, will be brought to fruition,” Mr Butler added.
