Kaitaia Considers Rubbish And Footpaths

[Special_ to “Northern Advocate J, l KAITAIA. This Day. A proposition for the removal of rubbish from the business premises and main street of Kaitaia was placed before the town board at its regular meeting. In the absence of Mr J. T. B. Taaffe. Mr Lloyd Peace presided. Mr Bennett waited on the board regarding the rubbish collection and suggested that the board accept responsibility for payment on a time basis for the first fortnight. Mr Mclntosh thought that a longer experimental period than a fortnight would be necessary to arrive at a fair basis for charging. The chairman, replying to the town clerk, said that accumulations of rubbish at the back of business premises would not be dealt with by the board. Mr McKinnon thought a monthly collection would be sufficient. It was decided to engage Mr Bonnett for a month, the payment to be £1 14/8 per day for a map and two horses and the service to be given one day each week. Encumbered Gift A letter was received from the Public Trustee in reference to the six acres left to the people of Kaitaia by the will of the late Mr H. B. Matthews. A survey had been completed and the board was asked to bear its share of the cost of survey and administration since the gift was made and to accept responsibility for rates over the area left to Kaitaia. It was decided to refer the letter to the Public Trustee for further information. Attention to Footpaths Mr McKinnon said he had been approached with requests to have some shale placed on three different streets. One was Melody Lane. It would be easy to make a footpath. Mr Mclntosh said the road would have to receive attention and he doubted whether they would be justified in attending to both the road and footpath. Mr McKinnon: The footpath along Bonnett’s road had been formed, but needs some covering. Mr Mclntosh: I wish I had as good a footpath. The next street mentioned by Mr McKinnon was Puckey’s avenue. Ho suggested that the path be attended to on one side from President's Street to the post office section and from that point on to the otner side.

Mr Mclntosh: Before we embark on improving footpaths we should see that those in other areas are brought up to the same standard as those for which improvements are suggested. Mr McKinnon said he favoured a metalled road to every house and also a footpath on one side of the street, The question was referred to the streets committee. Drainage Levels A plan prepared by Mr Hooper, showing drainage levels for the town district, was placed before the board. It was decided to go over the whole area with Mr Hooper. Referring to the country library service, the town clerk said Mr Mitchell had been at Kaitaia recently and arrangements had been made to have the books there in a week or two. Messrs Peace, Mclntosh and McKinnon were appointed a works committee for the coming month. Mr McKinnon asked when they would have the annual estimates. The town clerk: The first of July, when the council will consider the rates. Surfacing Footpaths Mr McKinnon: What are we going to do with the footpaths? Are they to be concreted or asphalted? Whatever is done should be done by contract. Mr Mclntosh: What is wanted first is repairs to the footpaths in the main street. If both footpaths were re-tarred and sanded we would get years of use out of them.

Mr McKinnon: Messrs Grinter Bros, have agreed to do (be footpaths at. Avvanui in asphalt at 3'- per square yard.

The chairman: The Highways Board won't consider a subsidy on footpaths in a town district. Mr McKinnon moved that Messrs Grinter Bros, be asked for a price and that the Highways Board be asked if it would contribute.

The motion was seconded by Mr Mclntosh and carried. Mr Peace: If any property owners in the main street prefer concrete we could deal with them on a 50-50 basis. Mr Mclntosh: The footpath fn front of the dairy company's new offices is to be done in concrete.

Control of Section On the motion of Mr McKinnon, seconded by Mr Peace, it was decided to request that the section in Melba Street, suggested as a site for a rest room be transferred to the Crown, and that the town board be appointed a domain board for the administration of the property. Referring to the bridge over the old course of the river near the A. and P. hall, the town clerk said an estimate of the cost of a concrete culvert was £ISOO and it was thought better to allow the river bed to rise in the course of nature as it was doing at present by deposits of silt. Timber was being obtained for repairs to the bridge. Mr McKinnon: Something should be done for the bridge is unsafe, and heavy school buses with children pass over it every day. Game Sanctuary Mr Mclntosh moved that application be made to have the town district gazetted a game sanctuary under the act. 1 The motion was seconded by* Mr McKinnon and carried.
