Italy Wants Closer Relations With Yugoslavia
(Received 1 p.m.) ROME, May 10. The King and Queen, Signor Mussolini .and members of Cabinet headed immense crowds on the arrival of Prince Paul, Regent of Yugoslavia his wife, Princess Olga, sister of the Duchess of Kent, and M. Markovitch Yugoslav Prime Minister, who drove through the flagged streets to the Quirinal Palace. Commenting on Prince Paul’s visit, the Belgrade official organ “Politika” says the visit is expected to result in closer political and economic relations between Italy ,and Yugoslavia. Admiral Cavagnari, Naval Undersecretary, in a statement in the Chamber, said the Fascists would soon possess four 35,000-ton and four 26,000ton battleships, 19 heavy cruisers, 12 fast cruisers, 60 large destroyers, 70 torpedo boats and over 100 submarines. He added that he spoke in accordance with Signor Mussolini’s order There was every possibility that the international situation might oblige Italy immediately, or in the near future, to count on the navy.
Anglo - Rumanian Trade Negotiations
LONDON, May 9. Answering in the House of Commons a question regarding trade negotiations with Rumania, the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Oliver Stanley, said that, as the negotiations were still in progress, he was not in a position to make a statement, taut the matter was being expedited as far as was possible, and he hoped to be able to make a statement in a short time. Mr Stanley was asked if, in view of Herr Hitler’s declaration that he desires a peaceful evolution of the European tension, Mr Stanley was proposing the resumption of trade discussions with Gex-many. The Minister replied: “As the honourable member knows, the tx’ade discussions had to be interrupted as the result of the European tension pxmduced by Germany’s annexation of Bohemia and Moravia. Whenever this tension abates I shall be glad to see the discussions resumed, with the view to improving trade relations between Britain and Germany.”
Le Quesnoy Commemoration
(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 9. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, will present a New Zealand Ensign and a New Zealand Rifle Brigade pennant on May 12 to Le Quesnoy in memory of the brigade’s recapture of the town in November, 1918.
