“South Riding” At The Regent
Typical Yorkshire scenery forms the background for one of the most uowerful dramas of the screen, “South Riding,” adapted from the novel by Winifred Holtby, which began a twonight season at the Regent last night.
It was a real piece of representative English life, with sincere acting creiting living characters, and firm, sympathetic direction building up drama from a succession of strong, varied incidents. It is the probability of its plot, drawn from the pattern of municipal lift and personal story, that is responsible for the strength and fascination of this successful attempt to make a true British picture. Ralph Richardson is magnificent as the greatly-troubled, poverty-stricken squire, and Edna Best gives what is regarded as the finest performance of ner career as the board school mi'strees. Edmund Gwenn, Ann Todd and Marie Lohr, recently seen in “Pygmalion.” are among the supporting cast. Produced by Alexander Korda for London Films, “South Riding” is a United Artists’ jubilee attraction. A Rathe Pictorial, a Screen Traveller picture of Budapest, and a most interesting coloured feature dealing with popular science complete a programme of outstanding merit.
The deficit is £527,000, revenue being £31.884,000 and expenditure £33,110,000. of which £698,500 is chargeable to borrowing. This is the highest since Eire became self governing.
