Kaikohe Sets Up Athletic Organisation
[Special to "Northern Advocate"] KAIKOHE, This Day.
A well-attended public meeting held in Kaikohe decided to establish in the town an amateur athletic club, to be known as the Kaikohe Amateur Athletic Club, and to embrace track and field events for men and women in the surrounding district. The desirability of forming such a club was stressed by a number of those present, who were of the opinion that athletics, in an amateur state, were among the best sports to keep % the young men and women of the district in a fit and healthy condition. It was decided that the club should affiliate with- the, Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Athletic Association before the opening of the summer season, and until that time the club members ai’e to be trained and assisted by former athletes living in the town. Election of Officers. I The first officers appointed to govern the affairs of the new club are as' follows: —Patron, Mr C. W. Boswell, | M.P.; president, Mr G. Wilson; vice- | presidents, Messrs P. J. Coyne, M. F. | Russ, P. M. Williams, H. Ingram, C. T. ! Beamish, P. F. Plewitt, M. Coad, H. R. Vail, B. Crawford, C. E. Blow, L. Smith, J. M. Crawley, W. C. Bell, B. Morfette, and R. Lincoln; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. W. Freer; clubcaptain, Mr A. McCready; handicapper, Mr F. W. Macdermott; starter, Mr M. F. Russ; committee, Misses L. Munn and M. D’Ewes, Messrs E. Preston, J. Roberts, J. Smith, J. McGregor, R. Showier, A. McCready, G. Wilson and W. W. Freer. After a long discussion, the meeting decided that Mr J. McNutt bo elected trainer for the field competitors, and that the appointment of a track trainer be left in the hands of the committee. Winter Competition. During the winter months it is intended to hold cross-country runs for club members, and indications are that the number of athletes participating in these runs, which are to commence on Saturday, will be quite high. A large number of girls were present at the meeting, and it seems that the women’s section of the club will possess several who will rank high among the competitors north of Auckland. Mr J. Roberts, a member of the teaching profession, who attended the meeting, stated that he was pleased to see that a club was being formed, as it had always struck him strange that the talent offering at the different schools throughout the district should pass unnoticed, simply because of the fact that there was no club in the distinct.
He felt confident that the club would achieve the maximum success, as it would receive all the support possible from the local schools.
