Excessive Speed Of Heavy Trucks
t Special to “Northern Advocate ”l KAIKOHE, This Day. Several complaints have been heard throughout the Bay of Islands district during the past month regarding the cart-less manner in which a large number of heavily laden, motor lorries 'are driven over the country roads.
Excessive speed seems to be the cause of the majority of the comments, as numerous motorists have had occasion to leave the road in order to avoid colliding with speeding
trucks. Two motorists recently has occasion to complain of the manner in which trucks negotiate the downhill grades on the Turntable Hill, and have found that the speed is not only excessive, but very dangerous for the drivers of the trucks concerned, and anyone else who might be on the road. Tt was pointed out by one motorist that the one-way bridge on the northern side of the Turntable Hill was a nerve centre so far as this route was concerned. “On one occasion 1 saw a truck travelling down the hill at a dangerous pace, and noticing the one-way bridge I slopped to let it pass,” he said. “The truck driver did not slacken Iris pace -as he approached the bridge, and crossed it doing at least 40 miles per hour. He had on a big load, and had only inches to spare on each side, so that he might easily have collided with one of the siderails,” (he motorist said.' “It is to be hoped that truck drivers will realise that on twisting roads and downhill grades it is not safe to drive over the speed limit.”
