Russia’s Attitude To Alliance Unaltered

(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 9. A communique from Moscow says Britain’s reply to the latest Russian ■observations asks the Soviet to give immediate assistance if Britain and France are involved fn military operations in the execution of their obligations towards Poland and Rumania. It adds ' that British counterproposals, to which France has not objected, do not include provision for reciprocal British and French help if the Soviet is similarly involved in the institution of obligations undertaken regarding any European State.

Reports of yesterday’s friendly conversation between the British Ambassador, Sir William Seeds, and M. Molotoff, Russian Foreign Minister, and the Soviet Premier, ' have reinforced the opinion held in official circles in London, as the result of earlier assurances,’ that M. Lityirioff’s resignation does not portend any change in the general direction, or in the main objective of the Soviet’s foreign policy. The considered views of the Soviet on the British attitude as expressed by Sir William, Seeds must now be awaited. •Angora reports indicate that the early announcement of an agreement between Britain and Turkey may be expected. Britain throughout her consultation with these Powers maintained the closest contact with France.
