Trench-Digger’s Shock

An explosion and a sheet of flame, followed by a general power failure, resulted when a workman, Mr S. Sturt, while digging a trench in a Hastings street, struck a 3500-volt power cable with his pick yesterday afternoon.

The. pick was hurled into the air, and Mr Sturt was thrown backwards by the terrific force of the explosion. Suffering from slight shock and a small head wound caused by the; pick handle, • Mr Sturt was able to resume work a few minutes later. The power was restored after half an hour.
