Basketball Season Opened In Whangarei

The Whangarei Basketball Association’s 1939 season commenced on Saturday afternoon, when 18 teams took part in tournament matches at the Whangarei Primary School courts.

The object of the day was to familiarise the teams with the New Zealand Basketball Association’s new set of rules, and also to make a commencement with the grading of teams for this year’s competitions.

Winners of the various sections were: A section, Hora Hora; B section, Old Girls’ A; C section, Woolworths; D section, Old Girls’ B; E section, Convent B (4 points); F section, Northland College B and Ngunguru (equal), three points.

Finals in the various grades resulted: A grade. Old Girls A 6, beat

Hora Hora 2; B grade, Wool worths 3, beat Old Girls’ B 1. The final in the C grade was awarded to Convent B.
