Chinese Pressure On Canton
(Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, April 21
The Hongkong correspondent of “The Times” states that despite rain, Chinese maintain pressure around Canton, and are spiritedly attacking Sunwui, near Kongmoon, where they claim to have secured a footing. They are also bombarding Tungkun, near Sheklung. Guerilla forces attacked Tsingmai Aerodrome, Hainan, and claim to have destroyed two Japanese aeroplanes. *fhe Chinese are expecting an early attack at Swatow, and have ordered early civilian evacuation, and the removal of factory machinery and supplies inland. Tokio reports that 3000 Chinese were killed at Tsengshing on Thursday. The Japanese lost 34. A Peking despatch says Chinese irregulars wrecked the Toli coal mine, south-west of Peking, capturing it, and holding it long enough to blow it up, after which they fled to the hills.
