On my factory return, April 20, there was stamped: “Money paid you for the year ending March 31, 1939. Keep for refer-
FARMERS’ ence.” Now, I take SECURITY TAX. it that means we
must use this amount as the basis on which we will pay the social security tax. Yet in August, 1938, we were paid a deferred payment for fat supplied from July, 1937, to July, 1938. So, if I am correct in my belief, we have to pay 1/in the £ on money earned one year and nine months ago, when others have p’aid Bd. Mr Nash asks us to take the same pay this year as last year. In tonight’s paper we see the makers of footwear have got an increase for their 40-hour week. Boots have gone up twice since Christmas. Does this mean another rise?
Is there another body of men in New Zealand who work such long hours in all weathers as the average dairy farmer?—"ONE OF THEM.”
Your correspondent, Mr McLachlan, of Omana, suggests improvements to the guaranteed price for butter, while in a previous “AdvoGUARANTEED cate” there appeared PRICES. a letter urging farmers to beware of 'a guaranteed price for wool. I have always maintained that the more Conservative elements in the farmers’ ranks, the ones who were apparently opposed to Labour, are the ones who today expect the most from the Labour Party. They imagine that Labour can wave a magic wand and give them something for nothing. It is these men and women who are most bitterly disappointed if they don’t get it. Why did not these men clamour a: the door of Mr Coates for these things years ago, when they were really in need? Perhaps “the saviour of the dairy farmer” rpay be able to oblige if Mr Nash faiIs.—“REMEMBER 1934.”
